Berry World

I'm a senior business woman constantly learning and striving to improve and increase our exposure to tourism and locals alike. Originally from Western Australia, I love living and working in Timboon.

Gascom (AU) Pty Ltd

Berry World has existed as a commercial and 'pick your own' strawberry and blackberry farm for 58 years. We purchased it from original owners, Joy and Alan Kerr in 2014. During our tenure we have added the Berry Good Thai restaurant (run by 2 Thai national chefs & 1 Thai cook) and Berry Good Accommodation for holiday makers. In addition, we have 2 ponies, 3 pet sheep and some chickens. Kids (and parents) love to feed the animals as well as run, play and pick strawberries. We also grow veges for the restaurant and have added an orchard of apples, nashis, pears, cherries and raspberries.

Distinguished and Famous people from Kalgoorlie

🌟 Professor Barry Marshall

Barry Marshall was born in Kalgoorlie in 1951 and spent part of his early childhood there before his family settled in Perth. He and Robin Warren shared the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for identifying Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. His research career developed in Perth and elsewhere, while Kalgoorlie records him in its Walk of Fame. His birthplace and childhood give the goldfields city a personal connection with a discovery that transformed understanding of a widespread disease.

🏛️ John Tonkin

John Tonkin was born at Boulder in 1902, attended Boulder City Central School and Eastern Goldfields High School, and began teaching as a monitor at Brown Hill State School. Those goldfields beginnings preceded teacher training and a long parliamentary career. He became Western Australia’s premier in 1971, with education remaining a recurring concern: his government introduced free school textbooks, while his earlier ministerial work had addressed school buildings, class sizes and teacher training. The local connection includes birth, education and early employment, giving the district a substantial place in the story before his later reputation as “Honest John”.

⚓ James Esdaile

James Esdaile completed his schooling at Boulder Central School before joining the Royal Australian Naval College’s first cadet intake in 1913. His naval career increasingly centred on anti-submarine defence, including specialist training, experimental work and planning for Australian waters. With John Collins he helped drive the Bathurst-class corvette programme, which supplied locally built escorts during World War II. Later responsibilities included convoy protection and naval work supporting operations in New Guinea. Boulder’s association is his actual schooling, before a highly technical sea-service career. It connects the Goldfields with someone whose professional attention turned to a very different environment beneath coastal waters.

🎓 Ralph Honner

Ralph Honner taught at Kalgoorlie for just over a year before becoming senior house master at Hale School in Perth in mid-1929. He subsequently studied law through evening lectures and qualified as a solicitor. His army career brought command in North Africa, Greece, Crete and Papua, including leadership of the 39th Battalion during the Kokoda campaign. He later worked in war-pensions administration and diplomacy. Kalgoorlie’s connection is an early teaching appointment, a reminder that the officer remembered for battlefield leadership had first practised responsibility in a very different setting.
